How to Search Civil Dockets
Kansas Courts CaseSearch is the statewide public index for a civil docket search. Pick District Court first. Enter a party name or case number. Set the Civil case type. Saline County and filing-date filters help when they appear. A precise case number is the fastest route. Names work too, if you check spelling and each party's role.
The online result is only one access level. A courthouse terminal in Salina can show broader public information or documents under Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22. Beyond that sit the civil desk and the clerk counter. A written court-record form and the State Archives round out the options.
- Select District Court in CaseSearch.
- Choose Party Name or Case Number.
- Apply Civil, Saline County, and date filters.
- Match the court, parties, filing date, and status.
- Read events in date order and request the actual judgment when needed.

What a Civil Docket Shows
A Saline County civil docket names the case, the court, the civil type, the filing date, the status, the judicial officer, and the parties and attorneys of record when public. Its event register can list petitions, answers, motions, notices, orders, hearings, judgments, and post-judgment action. One caution applies. A document link can be missing even when the event itself is public.
| Case header | Case number, District Court, civil type, filing date, and status. |
|---|---|
| Party block | Plaintiff or petitioner, defendant or respondent, and other public roles. |
| Filings | Petition, answer, motion, notice, and accepted supporting papers. |
| Settings | Public hearing date, time, and setting type when available. |
| Judgment events | Judgment, dismissal, satisfaction, garnishment, or appeal entries. |
The portal shows only what it shows. Don't infer an address, a dollar amount, or a document image the public screen never displays. The docket entry is the limit of what you can read.
Saline Civil Filing Volume
The official 2024 Civil Filings report counts 2,975 total Saline County filings in District 28. That total includes 244 regular actions and 1,981 limited actions. The gap explains why a broad party-name search often needs case-type and date filters.
Regular actions broke down as 82 contract, 86 other, 46 real-property, and 30 tort filings. Limited actions show 1,678 contract, 303 other, and zero real-property filings. These annual counts measure workload, not any current case outcome.
Types of Civil Cases
Saline County District Court runs several civil tracks. The CaseSearch label matters, since a regular action, limited action, domestic case, probate matter, or small claim uses different forms and can carry different access limits. Public family information may appear. Protected documents can stay unavailable.
- Regular contract, tort, and real-property actions
- Limited actions, including many debt-related filings
- Domestic relations and post-decree matters
- Probate-related proceedings
- Small claims and post-judgment enforcement
The event sequence usually opens with a petition or complaint, then service, a response, motions, settings, and judgment. Discovery can happen without every exchanged item becoming a public docket document.
Saline County Small Claims
The Saline County small-claims procedure caps a claim at $10,000. Interest, costs, and authorized damages sit on top of that cap. A plaintiff states the parties, the claim, the amount or property, and the reason behind it. The petition goes to the District Court clerk. Service runs through the Sheriff. The trial date is set at filing. The official page also lays out the local process and fee material.

A small-claims filing lands in the same District Court docket system used for other Saline civil matters. A defendant may answer with a counterclaim. Parties generally present their own cases without attorneys.
If the defendant fails to appear, default judgment can follow. If the plaintiff fails to appear, dismissal can. Confirm either outcome in the event register and the actual order.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil setting can take several forms. It might be a scheduling conference, motion hearing, trial, dispositive hearing, or post-judgment proceeding. Read the event label beside the latest notice or scheduling order. A date in the register proves only that something was scheduled. It does not prove the hearing occurred or that judgment was entered.
Resets and continuances can move a Saline County civil case without ending it. Check the newest docket entry first. When two notices conflict, confirm the date with the civil desk. The Saline County court calendar covers date-checking routes. The Kansas hearing-reminder service offers an optional reminder channel.
Read the latest event: A notice of setting, an order continuing the hearing, and the final judgment are separate records.
Saline Post-Judgment Events
A civil docket can keep moving after judgment. An abstract, garnishment, order in aid of execution, satisfaction, or appeal may be entered later. Each does different work. A satisfaction may show a judgment obligation was resolved, while a garnishment is a collection step.
- Default judgment
- A judgment that may follow when a required response or appearance does not occur.
- Dismissal
- An order ending a claim or case; its scope depends on the actual order.
- Garnishment
- A post-judgment process directed at property or funds under court procedure.
- Satisfaction
- An entry recording that a judgment has been fulfilled or released as stated.
Saline's small-claims page describes a garnishment request, a $15 service fee, notice-of-exemptions steps, and release procedures. The statewide FY2026-FY2027 fee chart lists civil, limited-action, post-decree, small-claims, and garnishment bands separately. Recheck current charges before filing.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Two free options cover Saline County civil docket access. CaseSearch gives basic case details online, while the public terminal at the District Court offers the broader view Kansas rules require. Need paper or help? The clerk counter handles inspection and copies. You can also file the Judicial Branch court-record form and choose email, mail, pickup, or fax as your delivery method. The clerk sets copy turnaround case by case, so no fixed timeline applies.
Key rules:
Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 separates internet access from broader courthouse-terminal access and lists restricted records.
Kansas Supreme Court Rule 24 requires filers to protect listed personal information.
K.S.A. 45-215 states Kansas Open Records Act policy, while court-record access also follows judicial rules.
Not every civil docket entry is open to the public. Adoption, care and treatment, child-in-need-of-care, and protection-order cases fall under access limits. So do divorce, custody, support, guardianship, parentage, and poverty-affidavit filings. A case may appear in the index. Its filed pages can still stay restricted online.
Saline Civil Docket or Judgment
Think of the docket as a timeline of court activity. Entries show when a petition, order, judgment, or satisfaction hit the file. But a docket line is not the signed document itself. The internet result is not a clerk-certified copy. Neither one replaces the paper at the clerk's counter.
| Record | Best use | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CaseSearch docket | Locate a case and trace public events | Statewide portal |
| Courthouse terminal | View broader public information or available documents | District Court |
| Certified judgment | Obtain official proof of the court’s signed ruling | Clerk of the District Court |
| Historical volume | Research an older civil or divorce record | Kansas State Archives |
Hunting an older Saline County case? Give the clerk the court, the approximate year, the party names, and any case number you know. For a current case, ask two things: whether the courthouse terminal shows more than CaseSearch, and whether a plain copy works or a certified one is required.
Note: A petition states a claim; only the later order or judgment records what the court decided.
Saline County Limited Actions
Limited actions dominate Saline County civil volume. The 2024 report counted 1,981 limited-action filings. The label helps you narrow a docket search, though it says nothing about the outcome. Read the entries in order: service, answer, setting, dismissal or judgment, then any later satisfaction or garnishment.
Saline County Domestic Settings
The 28th District local rules shape domestic settings. They set a 60-day domestic-relations hearing marker and an emergency-hearing process. Those procedures help you read a setting, but the signed order controls the real date and scope. Expect some domestic docket information to stay public. Divorce, custody, support, or protection documents remain restricted.
Saline County Civil Copy Requests
A good copy request names the full case number, the party names, the document title, the event date, the certification level you need, your contact information, and how you want delivery. Saline District Court posts no fixed copy fee or turnaround time. So ask the clerk for an estimate. Do not substitute the County Clerk's administrative KORA rates.
